Lecture "The requirements for accession to the European Union: what is meant by the reference to ‘the Copenhagen criteria of 1993’ and the EU fundamental values" by professor Jaap de Zwaan

Prof Dr Jaap de Zwaan, Dutch emeritus professor of European Union Law and former Director of the Netherlands Institute of International Relations, will give a guest lecture at the University Donja Gorica, on October 17, 2022, at 12.30 pm. Students from both University Donja Gorica, Faculty of Humanistic studies, and University of Montenegro, Faculty of Economics will take part in the lecture, titled “The requirements for accession to the European Union: what is meant by the reference to ‘the Copenhagen criteria of 1993’ and the EU fundamental values”.

Professor De Zwaan started his professional career as a member of the The Hague Bar. Thereafter he worked for 19 years with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague (European Integration Department and Legal Service) and Brussels (Permanent Representation of the Netherlands at the EU). In 1998 Jaap de Zwaan was appointed full-time professor of European Union Law at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He also served his Law School as Vice-Dean for International Affairs and Dean. In the period September 2005 until May 2011 De Zwaan was Director of the Netherlands Institute of International Relations, ‘Clingendael’. In May 2011 he returned to Erasmus University Rotterdam. In the period May 2012 until April 2017 De Zwaan furthermore has been active, on a part-time basis, as Professor European Integration at the The Hague University of Applied Sciences. Until the present day Jaap de Zwaan is still working in various fields related to European Union law and policies. He was Secretary-General of TEPSA until 2021 and is honorary TEPSA Board member since then.
