Seminar 1 "THE EU, CHINA AND THE WESTERN BALKANS: THE CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS OF FURTHER INTEGRATION"

Seminar 1 - "THE EU, CHINA AND THE WESTERN BALKANS: THE CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS OF FURTHER INTEGRATION" was organized by the Faculty of Economics of the University of Montenegro on 27 May, 2021 at 11am CET. The event was held at EU info centre in Podgorica, while international participants took part on Zoom platform.

This seminar explored the balance of power between China and the European Union in relation to the region. The aim was to consider whether and to what extent the presence of China could have an effect on the Western Balkans’ relationship with the European Union, and the potential impact on the accession prospects of nations in the region.

The seminar addressed the following questions:

The role of the geopolitics and geoeconomics of the power players in the region and their possible impact on the Western Balkans accession process.
Enlargement: Between domestic politicization and geopolitical competition.
Is a “win-win-win” situation possible for the EU-China-Western Balkan relationship?

The moderator of this event was prof. Danijela Jaćimović, CEP project coordinator. H.E. Dr. Oana-Cristina Popa, EU Ambassador and Head of EU Delegation to Montenegro, H.E. Liu Jin, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Montenegro participated on Zoom, as well as CEP team members - Frank Schimmelfennig, The Centre for Comparative and International Studies, Zurich, Kong Tianping, Institute of European Studies at Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Michael Kaeding, Department of Political Science, University of Duisburg-Essen. Participants that took part in the seminar in EU Info Center were Mrs Dragana Marković, Adviser to the Chief Negotiator for the EU Accession of Montenegro and Savo Kentera, President of the Atlantic Council of Montenegro.

The event took 90 minutes of intresting and exciting exchange of the views and thoughts, while the highlights and key points of the seminar were covered by 3 TV stations, 14 e-portals and 3 newspapers (about 300.000 viewers/readers).
