Public policy and decision making in the EU

Availability:
This course is compulsory on the BSc and is available on the undergraduate program: Humanistic studies, Department: European Studies.

Course content:
The aim of the subject is to introduce students to the basic functions of the process of creation and implementation of EU policies, the content of these policies, and in general with the consequences of the process of Europeanization of public policy. The material is partly linked to the standard literature on the political system and the political economy of the EU.
Teaching: 15 hours of lectures and 20 hours of seminars.

Module outcomes:
The aim of the subject is to introduce students to the basic functions of the process of creation and implementation of EU policies, the content of these policies, and in general with the consequences of the process of Europeanization of public policy. The material is partly linked to the standard literature on the political system and the political economy of the EU.

Students will increase knowledge and competences in the following topics:

  • EU Public policies;
  • EU decision making process;
  • European policy process in comparative perspective;
  • Social policy, employment and the environment;
  • Explanation of EU regulatory policy;
  • Common agricultural policy;
  • Cohesion policy;
  • Other internal policies of Economic and Monetary Union - Part I;
  • Economic and Monetary Union – Part II;
  • Policies in the area of freedom and security of citizens;
  • International relations-foreign policies;

Methodologies:
The main teaching and studying methods will be consisted of: Interactive lectures; lectures, exercises, seminars, consultations.

Literature:
Recommended literature will include classical textbooks on Political System of EU accompanied with specialized papers. The obligatory literature will include following books: H. Wallace, W. Wallace, M. Pollack, Policy-Making in the EU, Oxford University Press, 2014; Desmond Dinan, Ever Closer Union: An Introduction to European Integration, 2010.
